The 2014 Ippies Awards: The Best in Ethnic & Community Journalism
Francesca Messina and I were judges for the 2014 Ippies Awards, sponsored by the Center for Community and Ethnic Media, a project of the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism. The awards honor the best in ethnic and community journalism in the New York City area. Our category was Best Print Design, and the winner, announced at the Ippies Awards ceremony on June 5, was Allewaa Alarabi. They have an exciting and dynamic front page layout, and the inside is equally energetic. You can see complete issues of Allewaa Alarabi online here. Second place in the design category was awarded to the weekly Desi Talk newspaper, and third place went to the Nueva Luz photography magazine, published by En Foco. It was a real treat to see so many smart, engaging publications in this judging, and it was hard to pick just three finalists! Thanks to Steve Strasser from the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism for inviting me to be a judge and for helping us make our final choices.
