He’s been art director at some of the industry’s most successful and innovative magazines: Fortune, Reader’s Digest, Real Simple, Details, New York, Inside, Vibe and Entertainment Weekly. His design method has been described as a “mind-meld with the editorial vision” (Mediabistro.com, 2005). Before becoming an art director he worked as a political organizer, printer, typesetter, paste-up artist and editor. Most recently he has worked as creative consultant on iPad launches for Adweek and AARP.

The Alberta Magazine Publishers Association (AMPA) is thrilled to announce Robert Newman as keynote speaker for the 2013 Alberta Magazines Conference, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, on March 14-15.

Newman will speak to the conference theme of “The Future of Publishing Is Now” by addressing publishing trends in print, digital, mobile, online and social media that will impact what magazines may look like in the future. What should magazines be doing to prepare for the coming industry changes and developments? What are magazines doing right now that is visionary and adaptive, and how are they using new tools and platforms to extend their brands?

This keynote presentation will speak to an audience representing the diversity of Alberta’s consumer, city and regional, B2B and enthusiast magazines. And Newman is an ideal fit as keynote, having worked in so many genres—from men’s interest to business, women’s service to home décor—“it’s as though he is competing in the magazine pentathlon, vying for the gold in versatility” (Print magazine, 1998). He has even requested copies of AMPA’s member magazines to help cater his presentation to the particular needs and interests of his audience.
