Cover Review: Politico

My latest review for the Folio: online Face Up column looks at the May/June 2014 cover of Politico magazine. The cover features a striking cover line, “The Media Issue,” created by Post Typography and Politico creative director Janet Michaud. It’s a solid, label-like headline with an engaging, stylish image—a perfect fusion of text and graphics. […]

101 Kick-Ass Music Covers

Magazine covers featuring musical artists are inherently cool, whether the reader is a tween or a boomer. They come loaded with style, after all. (How many different looks—including varieties-not-found-in-nature of hair color—have Madonna and Bowie rocked on their many covers over the decades?) The result: memorable, provocative and sometimes flat-out crazy images of the stars. […]

My new cover review for the Folio: online Face Up column takes a look at the April 26, 2014 issue of Billboard. The cover features a cool photograph of singer Enrique Iglesias, sleek, minimal cover typography and a bold, poster-like logo; it’s highly original, extremely artful and a crowd-pleaser all at the same time (I […]

I’m going to be a judge this year for the Ippies Awards. The Ippies are sponsored by the Center for Community and Ethnic Media at the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism. They “honor reporting in English and other languages other than English by the ethnic and community press.” Judging is in early May, and I’ll […]

Each day we’ll be showcasing a different magazine that uses illustration as a major component of their design and content. The five magazines that we’ve picked: Eight by Eight, Anorak, […]
